Choose Your Own Adventure (CYOA) stories are fun and enjoy a growing audience of readers worldwide. They’re a book crossed with a game, what reader could resist? But CYOA stories aren’t just fun to read, they’re fun to write as well, once you understand what’s required. They’re different from any other kind of genre story, but the differences are easily laid out and understood. After I worked out what was required of a CYOA story I’ve been able to write them. They really aren’t very difficult when you have a plan.
This book will give you that plan. In what follows I give a blueprint of sorts for how to set up a CYOA story. Once you get the hang of it you won’t need this blueprint, but it will have done what it’s meant to do help get you started.

I came across this author's blog recently while working on CYOA book of my own. Woodward is not only a talented writer, she has a good sense of form and has great insights into how to make a maze story work.
I have a friend who wrote a choose-your-own adventure story and it seemed like such a fun story! But also a ton of work. Where do you begin? So how do you create your own fun story? This book lays it out step-by-step, starting with the brainstorming phase and character building all the way through the finer aspects of how to do the thing. Not a long book, but very succinct and clear on how to create YOUR choose your own adventure story, no boring fluff. Just good, clear directions with a wee bit of 'you can do it.'
While this book is well written, I bought it because I wanted to learn about writing a choose your own adventure story and most of the book is not really on this topic.
Most of the book is about how to plot a story using a traditional structure, not about how to write a branching story, and the main example the author uses is from Harry Potter which really just illustrates how a story works, not how a branching story works.
I wanted information on how to create a CYOA story and if the author had given a step by step guide and examples from an actual CYOA story (or maybe even built a story as she wrote the book) to show the readers examples from the genre then I would have been happy. Unfortunately I'm a bit disappointed that I didn't get that and none of my questions on CYOA writing were answered.
I wanted to learn some more info on CYOA. How to create one is amazing! For what I paid it was worth it. Great job! Thanks for taking the time to create this resource.
