Research shows that up to 65% of adoptive parents will go through post adoption depression. Little is written about it, less is discussed. This book is an account of my time there in the dark days after we brought our daughter home."I'm hiding in the dark, kneeling on the floor of my walk-in closet, praying. Well, I wouldn't really call it praying. Mostly I'm just fighting back tears and trying unsuccessfully to gain control of my emotions. And if I'm being honest, I'm here mainly to hide from my children. And when I say children, I mean her.How long has she been here? Days, weeks, months, and still I'm not doing better. What the heck is my problem? I need to get a grip. The guilt is insurmountable. She needs me. She needs and deserves a mother. She deserves to be loved, finally. And yet I am still regretting the decision. I put myself into this situation. I asked for her to be here. And now I do this? Hide? Cry? Seethe? I suck."

This is a must-read for adoptive parents who are struggling balancing the expectations of an adoption with the reality once the child is placed with you. Elias describes her path through infertility, failed adoption, the adoption of her son, and her choice to adopt a second child from China. In it, we see that past scars have a way of carrying over to future happiness. This can be true for both the parent and the child. She says "We were mother daughter but we did not fit together yet." The last third of the book details her struggle to make their relationship fit together despite past hurt, depression and a history her and her daughter did not share. Through patience and a lot of hard work, this mother and daughter found comfort in each other and eventual healing. Adoption agency brochures make it seem like it is love at first site for both parents and their new children. Elias shows that adjusting a new child into your family can be a huge undertaking that permanently changes the dynamics of that family forever. The author has a beautiful way of letting you into intimate moments of her life without forcing the experience on to you. This was a very good read!

Don't Call Me Mother Elizabeth Elias 9780557085125 Books Reviews
I haven't experienced the pain of infertility, I have never adopted a child, nor am I adopted. However, this book had me in tears (as well as occasional fits of laughter). I've never been able to sum up the feelings of love I have for my own child, and reading this book felt like they were being taken right out of my mouth.
I couldn't put it down... It was an amazing description of an amazing journey. The writing was warm and friendly as well as thought provoking, reminding me a bit of "Eat Pray Love" You feel like you're there with her, on a rollercoaster ride full of incredibly happy ups and devastating downs.
Brutally honest and evocative writing, with a spiritual side to it, this should not only be mandatory reading for anyone thinking about toddler or overseas adoption... it should be mandatory reading for anyone thinking about becoming a parent.
About a month ago, I sat down and read Elizabeth Elias's personal memoir "Don't Call Me Mother." Don't Call Me Mother is Elizabeth's personal journey of infertility and adoption of two children - a son from a domestic adoption and a daughter from China.
The first words out of my mouth was "Where was the this book when I needed it." I connected in so many ways to Elizabeth's journey through infertility then then through adoption. It was like I was re-living my journey as I read her words. I thought I was alone. Now I know I'm not. I thank Elizabeth for being so honest in feelings and writing them down for all to see. It is hard to admit to yourself and to others that you do not immediately love your adopted child. There is so much guilt involved over not loving your adopted child immediately.
This book is a must read for all potential adoptive parents. I read so much on the attachment issues of child to parent but this is really the first book that really talked from the heart of attachment issues of the parent to the child.
Thank you Elizabeth for letting me know and others know that we are not alone in this journey.
